Equine Therapy & Horse Training
Comprehensive care of your horse’s musculoskeletal system is not just about a one-time treatment. It’s about a program that combines quality release (via therapy – more info here) with activation (targeted exercises). Equine therapy helps release tension, improve blood circulation, restore tissue elasticity, and prepare the body for movement. Therapeutic exercises – from the ground or under saddle – build on this and help establish new movement patterns, developing stability, coordination, and balance.
Together, they form an effective tool not only for regeneration but also for preventing issues, enhancing performance, and supporting your horse’s overall well-being.
A major advantage of this combination is that the rider also learns specific, tailor-made exercises that can be incorporated into regular training or horse care. This significantly helps maintain the results of the therapy, supports soft tissue flexibility, and prevents the horse from returning to unbalanced movement patterns. The horse is no longer just a passive recipient of therapy, but actively participates in its own recovery and improvement of overall condition.
The Benefits of a Combined Approach
- One comprehensive session
- Longer-lasting results: Therapy releases stiff muscles, fascial tension, and overloaded areas. Exercise then helps integrate these relaxed tissues into functional movement, prolonging the benefits.
- New movement patterns: After therapy, the horse’s body is more responsive to change. Correctly chosen exercises (from the ground and in the saddle) help reset bad habits, eliminate compensations, and build healthy motor skills.
- Improved balance and coordination
- Lower risk of reinjury: Without activation, the body often returns to old habits. Exercise strengthens weak areas and supports symmetrical movement to prevent setbacks.
- Rider involvement: Riders learn simple, personalized exercises they can include in daily care or training – a valuable tool to support their horse’s condition between therapy sessions.
- Individualized approach: Each training plan is tailored to the specific horse – considering its capabilities, workload, and limitations.
- Future injury prevention: The combination of release and targeted activation leads to overall balance of the musculoskeletal system. Regular work of this type helps prevent chronic issues and injuries.
The 7 Steps of the Vicious Cycle
- Unbalanced movement patterns
The horse compensates – overusing some areas, underusing others. The body finds the easiest way, which isn’t always the right way. - Increased muscle tension and tissue shortening
Without release, soft tissues stiffen – especially in the neck, back, loins, and sacrum. Fascia loses elasticity, muscles shorten. - Limited range of motion and decreased flexibility
The horse struggles to step out, bend, or engage the pelvis. Movement becomes limited and inefficient. - Decreased ability to carry the rider properly
Without balance and an active core, the horse can’t carry weight correctly – the back hollows, the topline stiffens, or the hind end doesn’t engage. - Overload and micro-injuries
Overloaded areas (tendons, ligaments, back) become prone to injury. Blockages, back pain, lameness, or sensitivity to touch can develop. - Reduced performance and behavior changes
The horse stops “working” – loses impulsion, willingness, and becomes resistant to aids, bending, or rider communication. - Chronic issues due to long-term compensation
Without targeted correction and release, the problem deepens. The body locks into the wrong pattern, loses mobility, and recovery takes longer.
